Air pollution

Sir,—ln reply to P. M. Williams (June 23), fire and smoke are essential to clean, healthy living. Not everyone has facilities for burning rubbish. The Waimairi dump with its dust, flies, rats, birds and stench could cause an environmental pollution legacy for future generations with no blame to the open fire. The much maligned bonfire is an excellent check on fruit tree pests and with the advent of the Californian fruit fly it is regretted that the fire ban is usually in force during the insects’ breeding season. — Yours, etc., M. A. HOGAN. June 24, 1983.
