Hulbert wins cycle event
Barry Hulbert capitalised on a number of mishaps to score a deserved win in the Hornby professional 52km road cycling race at Halswell on Saturday. The race, which had a massed start, was affected by late withdrawals through illness, several punctures, and a crash near the finish. With 300 m to ride, Hulbert
sprinted to the lead with a bunch of 10 riders in hot pursuit. Steve Doherty then rolled a tyre and crashed and, although Gavin Hughes closed the gap slightly, Hulbert was two lengths clear at the line. Results.—B. Hulbert, Ihr 12min 50s, 1; G. Hughes, 2; B. Stanaway, 3; K. Inster, 4. Sealed handicap: R. Prince, 1.
