Pipeline project $33M
PA Wellington The Natural Gas Corporation plans to spend about $33 million on natural gas pipelines through the Gisborne and Wairarapa regions. The Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, said that the North Island gas network would be virtually completed by the pipelines, work on which was due to start late this year or early next. But he said that Government assistance to the corporation would only be given if the local industry and community were prepared to meet their share of the costs. A spokesman for his office said that the level of Government funding was subject to negotiation. The planned Gisborne line would be built from Whakatane through Opotiki to Gisborne, costing $24.5 million, said Mr Birch. The Wairarapa pipeline from Pahiatua, past Masterton and Dalefield, would cost $8.5 million.
