Big fire in In’gill store
PA Invercargill A fire which destroyed an Invercargill hardware and building supplies store on Saturday night was being treated as suspicious, said a Fire Service safety officer yesterday. About 35 firemen took 1% hours to bring the blaze at the premises of Fletcher Placemakers under control, as strong winds threatened to spread the fire to nearby woolstores. The entire building was gutted. Although no estimate has been made, damage is expected to run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. The fire-safety officer said the investigation had been handed over to the Invercargill C. 1.8. The store’s manager, Mr A. R. Waghorn, said it was most unlikely that anything could be salvaged. He said the store would open as usual this morning at nearby premises, with stock from other branch stores. Saturday’s fire was the third big property blaze in Invercargill this year. All were business premises.
