Nuclear weapons

Sir,—lt is difficult for anyone to be expert in the wide range of fields needed to assess environmental hazards and I suspect this limits both Dr Bertell and Mr Atkinson in the debate over French nuclear tests. Mr Atkinson has claimed that the underground explosions could not break through skm of basalt rock, and that in fact the explosions seal the rock. May I ask what has been the maximum pressure exerted on this rock and whether the sealing occurs after the explosion has dissipated and the rock cools? (If so, it seems hardly relevant.) Simple-minded people might think the best way to split rock is to bore a hole in it, put in some explosive, seal it and then light the fuse.— Yours, etc., ALAN WILKINSON. June 24, 1983.
