Varied show
The work of five artists from throughout New Zealand is on show at the C.S.A. Gallery this week.
John Scott is from Invercargill and is the head of the art department at the community college. His 24 paintings feature landscape forms.
The paintings, all completed in the past year, are in acrylics and concentrate on the contrast in form and colour as seen in the land-
scape. Mr Scott exhibited at the C.S.A. in 1971 before going overseas.
Marie Abbott is a wellknown Auckland weaver Who specialises in Soumac rugs. The rugs are based on early Turkistan techniques which have been adapted to modern materials. The weaver concentrates on achieving a variety of textures using handspun and dyed fleece wool.
She has nine pieces hanging at the gallery and, although it is her first exhibition at the C.S.A., has exhibited widely in Auckland.
For Hilary Osmers, a New Plymouth sculptor, it is her first exhibition at the C.S.A.. Twelve pieces in polyester resin feature spirals and ripples and reflect the sculptor’s interest in colour and shapes. Some drawings are also included in the exhibition.
Eighteen monoprints by Gussie Fenton of Motukarara are also included. The prints are made by drawing inks directly onto glass, placing paper on top and printing off the colours and patterns.
The 18 prints feature faces and figures. Gussie Fenton has exhibited before in group exhibitions at the gallery. Catherine Brough’s works are oil on canvas and are concerned with contrasting simplified formal structures. The artist says she has always found transparent or reflective surfaces alluring. .
The exhibition which opened on Sunday runs until June 26.
