Jail for fraud

A man convicted on three charges of fraud, involving $3300, and two charges of burglary, was sent to prison for nine months by Judge Hobbs in the District Court yesterday. Paul Mervyn Williams, aged 29, unemployed (Mr W. Rosenberg), had admitted burgling a house in Glandovey Road on March 15. Using a cheque book taken from the house, Williams had obtained $2OOO in cash. Other property taken from the house was valued at $BOO. From a house he burgled in Geraldine Street, on December 17, last year, the defendant took a pass book which he later used to obtain $3OO in cash.

On April 22, Williams had unsuccessfully attempted to use a cash flow card to

obtain $lOOO from a city bank. The card had been given to him by a person Williams had refused to name. The Judge said the offending was “purely for personal gain” and Williams had been - able to obtain more than $3OOO from his criminal offending. Williams, said the Judge, had three previous convictions, the last in August, last year. On a number of occasions a sentence of periodic detention had . been imposed. Such a sentence had been of little deterrent value because on three occasions the defendant had breached such sentences. It was in the public interest that a custodial sentence be given, said the Judge.
