English team named

NZPA Arundel The England cricket selectors have named three players who missed last summer’s Ashes series against Australia in their team for the World Cup one-day series starting on Thursday. The Middlesex captain, Mike Gatting, the Kent fast bowler, Graham Dilley, and Lancashire’s fast medium pacer, Paul Allott, are the three newcomers in the 14man squad. Gatting sealed his place in the squad with the fastest century of the county season against Sussex at Lords last Monday. He plundered 118 from only 93 balls against an attack that included the giant South African paceman, Garth le Roux.

Dilley, who has had accuracy problems in the past, like Allott has been a form bowler in county matches this season.

Dilley and Allott are two of five pace bowlers in the squad. The other three are the captain, Bob Willis, the champion all-rounder, lan Botham, and West Indianborn Norman Cowans.

Hampshire’s all-rounder, Trevor Jesty, backs up that quintet with his right-arm medium pacers.

The Somerset orthodox left-armer, Vic Marks, is the only spinner in the 14man squad. The squad is: Willis capt, Gower, Gatting, Derek Randall, Lamb, Fowler, Chris Tavare, Botham, Allott, Cowans, Dilley, Marks, Jesty and Gould.
