Delights from birds
New Zealand Birds. Produced by Warren Jacobs. Kowhai Publishing/Whitcoulls, 1983. 111 pp. $19.95. (Reviewed by Peter Harper) This book, from a small Christchurch publishing company formed in 1977, contains 125 colour photographs of 106 different examples of New Zealand birds. It is a very good coverage. Each photograph has a note of two or three sentences on the bird depicted. The remaining text is very short, limited to a page on each of four regions: Don Braithwaite contributes “Inhabitants of
our Coasts” and “Birds of the Forests”; Don Hadden writes on “Dwellers of the Wetlands,” and John Warham discusses “The Oceanic Birds.” Fifteen people or agencies have contributed to the photographs in the book. And these are excellent. The combination of good printing, good layout, and quality paper have turned up trumps. Add a most refreshing price, and this book on New Zealand’s birds should be a winner, both with visitors to the country and with many local people, who enjoy good bird photography.
