‘Press’ Cup lead

Lincoln College, with another good mark of 18 on Saturday, retains the lead in “The Press” Centennial Cup best and fairest competition. It was one of five teams to score 18 out of the possible 20 on Saturday, and the only one to do better was Linwood, which was awarded 11 out of 12 for sportsmanship, and the full eight for how well it played to its abilities. There was some interesting marking on Saturday. Albion, despite being clearly beaten by Linwood, also received the full eight points for effort and while Merivale-Papanui supporters were congratulating their side for an improved performance, Mr G. J. Braithwaite, who refereed the game, was obviously not impressed. He gave Merivale-Papa-nui only two points for

effort, and he did" not rate the winner, Shirley, much higher. It received a four. Four teams are a game behind the others and they will catch up when they play their night game on Wednesday. One is Burnside, which had the best average before last Saturday. However, this advantage was lost when it added just 14 points on Saturday. University A and Sydenham both suffered automatic three-point deductions when they had players sent to the sin bin. The pair were the rival props, Phil Robson (University A) and Steve Schultz.

Points awarded by the referees on Saturday were:—

Linwood, sportsmanship 11, constructiveness 8, total 19; Suburbs, 12, 6, 18; University B, 12, 6, 18; Lincoln College, 11, 7, 18; High School Old Boys, 11, 7, 18; Albion, 10, 8, 18; Marist, 11, 6, 17; Belfast, 12, 5, 17; Christchurch, 10, 6, 16; University A, 9,7, 16; New Brighton, 9,6, 15; Sydenham, 8,6, 14; Burnside, 9,5, 14; Hornby, 9, 5,14; Shirley, 9,4, 13; Merivale-Papanui, 9,2, 11.

The total points are:— Lincoln College 105, Marist 102, Albion 97, New Brighton 96, High School Old Boys 94, Linwood 93, University A 92, University B 91, Shirley 90, Hornby 89, Merivale-Papanui and Suburbs 88, Burnside 87, Christchurch 81, Belfast 79. 'Sydenham 76.
