Knock-out a surprise win

Fred Faavise, of Barry’s gymnasium, needed only Imin to win the main bout at the Eric Pocock Memorial boxing tournament at the Caledonian Hall yesterday. The sudden end to the contest was all the more surprising because Faavise’s opponent, Mark Sew Hoy (Papanui), has compiled an extensive string of victories over the last two seasons.

Another competitor from Barry’s gymnasium, Shane Everest, was most impressive in his win over Lance Austin (Richmond Workingmen’s Club), a performance which earned him the “boxer of the day” award. Mark Smith, of Greymouth, was also confident in his outlook, landing many strong punches in an abbreviated contest against Robert Hewinson, of Papanui. Hewinson was unable to continue after the first round.

The Eric Pocock Trophy was won by -Wayne Innes (Temuka), a clear-cut winner over John McDonald (Woolston Workingmen’s Club). Results:—
