Aust, jobs toll jumps

NZPA Sydney

Unemployment in Australia jumped by 187,000 in the six months to March to more than 700,000 as the world-wide recession finally hit home, the State-owned Commonwealth Bank has said. Quoting the latest figures available from the Federal Government Statistician, the bank said that the two worst-hit areas of the Australian economy were the manufacturing and construction industries. The bank, analysing the figures in its May newsletter released yesterday, said that over the whole year to March 1983, 262,000 people joined the dole queues, but more significantly, 71 per cent of them (187,000) lost their jobs in the last six months.
