Campus to have marae

PA Auckland Plans for an immediate start on the building of a marae at Auckland University have been announced by the university’s vicechancellor, Dr Colin Maiden. In his address at the capping ceremonies at the Auckland Town Hall, he said that when the marae project last reached the drawing board stage — in 1976 — it was thought it could be completed in time for the university’s centennial celebrations. The centenary takes place this week-end.

Dr Maiden said the university was still waiting for approval of funds through the University Grants Committee for the marae, which is expected to cost more than $1 million. “However, the university is anxious to make a start on this very important project and I am delighted to announce that a start is to be made inftnediately on the detailed planning of the whare whakairo, or meeting house,” he said. Construction of the meeting house will begin next year.
