Rail societies’ festival
Canterbury rail societies will take part in a weeklong national railway history festival starting tomorrow. Rail History Festival ’B3 is sponsored by the National Federation of Rail Societies, a grouping of more than 20 societies throughout New Zealand working towards the preserving of the country’s railway and tramway history.
Five rail groups from Canterbury will take part in the festival. At Ferrymead Historic Park services will run seven days a week under the guidance of the Tramway Historical Society. Extra services will be provided tomorrow and next Sunday. The Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Railway and Locomotive Society
which runs the Feriymead railway will display its restored Fl 3 Peveril as well as organising a display in a central-city shopping arcade. The Canterbury Steam Preservation Society will run its bush tramway at McLeans island on May 15, weather permitting. Other displays will be held at Ashburton and Pleasant Point.
