Gangs sign peace pact
The leaders of the Highway 61 and the Devil’s Henchmen gangs in Christchurch have signed a “peace pact” after meeting on neutral territory under police supervision on Thursday evening. The two leaders of the motor-cycle gangs, who were each accompanied by another ■ gang member, agreed to keep out of each other’s way, said a police spokesman. Copies of the agreement were held by the police and it was likely that a similar meeting would be arranged later in the year, said the spokesman.
Both leaders had been anxious that gang tensionsbe diffused and were confident that they could ensure that their members did not break the pact.
Six members of the Devil’s Henchmen have been charged in the District Court with the murder of a Highway 61 gang member, Quentin Martin. Eleven Highway 61 members have been charged with being an unlawful assembly with the common intention of intimidating people in the District Court.
