General forecast: Winds are expected to be strong from the westerly quarter with gales in some areas. It should be fine in the east from Gisborne to north Otago and about Cook Strait. Elsewhere it will be cloudy with occasional showers, but there will be fine intervals in Nelson and inland parts of Otago and Southland. District forecast: Canterbury: Winds becoming variable; mainly cloudy, with rain about the Alps, and a few falls possible further east. Marlborough: North-wester-lies, up to gale force about the Sounds and strong elsewhere; fine and mild.

Nelson: Westerlies, strong in exposed places; mainly fine, but showers about the western ranges and a few isolated falls elsewhere. Buller, Westland: Cool, showery weather with fresh south-westerly winds. Tomorrow: Showers in Buller and Westland; mainly fine elsewhere.
