N.Z. tennis team in semi-finals
NZPA-Reuter Dusseldorf New Zealand and Spain moved into the last four of the World Team Tennis Cup yesterday two days ahead of schedule. New Zealand beat the host. country, West Germany, 2-1, in the tournament’s “Blue” group to make sure of qualifying for tomorrow’s semi-finals before their last group game today, while the Spanish team trounced France, 3-0. In the singles Chris Lewis beat Peter Elter in convincing style, 6-3, 6-0, to level the scores at 1-1. Lewis then teamed up with Russell Simpson in the doubles to beat Andreas Maurer and Wolfgang Popp, 7-5, 6-3, to give the Kiwis their victory.
West Germany got off to a great ’start when. Damir Keretic thrashed Russell Simpson, 6-0, 6-2. The New Zealander seemed quite unable to time his shots and made a series of unforced errors. Chris Lewis changed the story dominating the West German No. 1, Peter Elter, in his equally comfortable victory. Both Spain and New Zealand have won both their group matches and qualify for the semi-finals before they meet each other in the last game today. In the “Red” group all four teams have won one and lost one. In today’s deciding games the United States meet Sweden, and Australia plays Chile.
