As I was crossing the Hereford-Colombo Streets intersection I was stunned to see police searching through a young man’s personal belongings which were on display for all to see, the greatest shock being that the search was taking place in the middle of the intersection. Are our policemen so flagrant in thendisregard of the rights of an individual to be treated with respect? Being searched in such a blatant manner is bad enough but as a result of police action this individual was made to suffer the further indignity of having half of Christchurch looking on. Surely they could have conducted their search in a more private place, or at least on the pavement instead of the middle of the road. Their actions, warrant a cry of protest from any citizen who likes to see the dignity of all people upheld. — Yours, etc.,
