Rate increase

Sir,—Christchurch city ratepayers should make it clear to the Deputy Mayor, Cr Rex Lester, that “heartaches and headaches” (“The Press”, May 4) are not conducive to the clear thinking necessary in good management. Nor will these ailments bring any expression of sympathy, from those who have to pay the increased rates. Every year the same lame excuses are expressed with sorrow from the “power house”, the City Council, as it announces yet another rise in the rates. And this year there has been no general wage increase for council employees yet the proposed 30 per cent rate increase will be higher than the increase on rates last year. In the present economic state it is past belief that the councillors have the effrontery to even put forward some of the costly schemes outlined in “The Press” report. The ratepayers have to cut their cloth according to income and I suggest to Cr Lester it is about time the City Council did likewise. — Yours, etc., D. NICOL. May 4, 1983.
