Building ‘thriving in Heathcote’
The building industry was thriving in Heathcote County, judging by the number of building permits issued in March, said Cr M. J. Taylor last evening. Cr Taylor noted at a works and reserves committee meeting that permits to
the value of $506,087 were issued in March. Twentyeight permits were issued, six for neW dwellings. The County Engineer, Mr D. J. May, reported that 325 permits to the value of $5,635,044 had been issued during the 12 months ended March. This showed an in-
crease on the previous year from 321 permits worth $4.6 million, including 42 new houses.
In the two previous years, permits had numbered 226 (1981) worth $3 million and 203 (1980) worth $2.2 million. In 1981 33 new houses had been built and 19 in the next year. Cr Taylor said the increase showed that the building industry was alive and well in Heathcote. Cr B. E. Sutherland said the new houses, “one a week,” represented a 2.5 per cent growth of ratepayers in the county.
