Creche move $126,000
The $126,000 expense of shifting the Cathedral Square Creche to better premises in the city centre would increase the Christchurch City Council’s community services committee demand on rates more than 35 per cent. Total spending of about $700,000 was recommended by the committee last evening, up from $513,000 last year.
Of that spending, $359,810 would be for child care, $287,271 for community development, and $58,377 for community centre maintenance and capital works.
Councillors recommended the spending of $12,000 to help the Christchurch Unemployment Collective hire two rights workers. Another $4OOO would be provided by the Canterbury Trades Council, which proposed the financial aid.
The subsidy would also pay for rent, rates, and power and telephone charges for the Unemployment Collective. Some councillors said they were concerned about spending ratepayers’ money on an organisation that could be seen to be offering radical solutions to unemployment problems.
