Canned fruit inquiry ends

PA- Wellington A Commerce Commission inquiry into removing canned fruit from price control ended in Wellington yesterday. J. Wattie Canneries sought the freedom because it said it would be better able to compete against foreign producers. Central Otago Fruit also favoured the removal from control. In submissions yesterday, the Combined State Unions said that control should be retained.

The inquiry, which lasted 2% days, came after a recommendation by the Industries Development Commission that canned fruit price control be referred to the Commerce Commission.

It will now report to the Minister of Trade and Industry.
