Favourable barrier draws for form runners

BY

G. K. YULE

Favourable barrier draws should contribute greatly to the chances of Lord Louie in the Sires’ Produce Stakes Final and Our Mana in the Wee Win Free-for-all at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrowing evening.

It was only a fortnight ago that Lord Louie made an impressive race debut at Methven. Then, last Saturday, he failed by only a neck to catch Logan Dryham in the fastest of the three heats. There was much to enthuse over about the placing of Lord Louie as he was slow away and then met a check at a vital stage inside the final 800 m. He came on at a great rate and failed by only a neck. He is obviously one of the most promising young pacers in Canterbury and, from No. 3 at the barrier, he should be more than a match for most in this field.

Logan Dryham was slow away before he won his heat, but he recovered quickly and led for the last 1500 m. Like Lord Louie, he looks to have great potential as a stayer. Unfortunately he has to overcome the disadvantage of a second-line draw, but this could be well within the capabilities of the son of Dryham Lea. Kotare Tyrone made the pace and was caught by Comedy Lad in a record-run Welcome Stakes on April 2 when having his first race start. He won his heat quite convincingly last Saturday, but his time for the 2000 m was more than three seconds slower than that of Logan Dryham. For all that Kotare Tyrone has great ability and it will be surprising if he fails to take a prominent part in the finish. Natural Guy, Roydon Glen, Tough Nut, King Alba and Keystone Adios appeal’ most of the others.

Our Mana, fresh from a win over 3200 m at Methven on April 19, should win the Wee Win Free-for-all. He has drawn the favoured No. 1 barrier position and will no doubt try for an end-to-end victory. Kind Nature, Glen Lustre, Hobart Star, and Agrinion have been racing to good purpose lately and they could run Our Mana fairly close. Diamond Moose would have been high on the list of possibilities, but he will start from wide out, placing him at a big disadvantage. He is a proven top miler having finished fourth in the Pan Am Mile' back in February, shading Our Mana. Race 1 5.35
