Second death after accident
A second person has died as a result of a head-on collision on the Main West Coast Road, near West Melton, on Sunday morning. He was
Wayne Peacock, of RDS, Christchurch. Mr Peacock was the driver of one of the two cars involved in the accident.
Another man, Bruce Robert Lord, aged 26, died in the crash. His wife, Mrs Susan Lord, is seriously ill in the intensive care unit of Christchurch Hospital. One Salvation Army officer is dead and four others are in Masterton Hospital after an accident south of Carterton on Saturday afternoon. The dead woman was
Rita May Hoyland, aged 59, of Masterton.
Her husband, Bruce Ronald Hoyland, is in a satisfactory condition and their daughter, Miss Beryl Hoyland, aged 23, is in a serious condition. Other occupants of the crashed vehicle were Cap-
tain Beryl Glendinning, aged 40, who is in a satisfactory condition, and Lieutenant Christine Smith, aged 27, the driver, who is described as being in a “fairly satisfactory” condition. Another occupant of the vehicle, Mrs Mary Fido, aged 43, was not injured in the accident. Constable Warwick Connor, said the accident occurred just before 4 p.m. when the vehicle, a van owned by the Salvation Army, was travelling south. The police seized a car and were interviewing a man yesterday in connection with the hit-and-run death of a man, aged 22, on the Great South Road, Auckland, early on Sunday. The police were still looking for witnesses to the incident which led to the death of Mr Colyn Neil Hodgkinson, of Manurewa. The police want to hear from two young European women who took a dark blue Mini to a Green Bay service station between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., on Sunday with a broken windscreen.
