Labour Party policy
Sir,—Born into the Labour movement, believing uncles Ted Howard, Tim Armstrong, Bob Semple and Paddy Webb were blood relatives like my real Uncle Jim Thorn, I am sad this Easter. Failing a prophet to lead us from this morass, we- get Mr Lange, with no Christian name like uncles have — a Jeremiah, a woeful “denouncer of the times”. Where is Toryism’s alternative? We cannot expect socialism through democracy — the international Shylocks, mortgagees even of our grandchildren’s productivity, would not permit it, but the 1935 Savage Government did provide an alternative, New Zealand leading the world from worse depression and worse unemployment, heralding an era of social security, now charitified into “welfare.” One example:— 75c medical benefit when wages were $lO, equal $lB today, but Mr Lange, brainwashed by National, would not face such equity.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J.
