Myxomatosis
Sir,—Thank you for the correspondence on this nationally important subject, especially the letter from Joyce Tucker (March' 30). Perhaps “ordinary” New Zealanders will now see that myxomatosis is not a simple issue. Heaven, forbid, but if the farmer is allowed to unleash this hellish force, it will be too late. Once let loose it cannot be stopped. Minds cannot be changed. If the campers, trampers, rabbit farmers and pet owners decide now myxomatosis need never reach these shores. Please reprint the address of protest letters.—Yours, etc DON MACKENZIE. April 4, 1983. [The advertisement from the Chief Executive, Agricultural Pests Destruction Council, P.O. Box 4020, Wellington, under the heading, “Environmental impact assessment myxomatosis,” said in part: “The Agricultural Pests Destruction Council has commissioned an environmental impact assessment on the possible reintroduction of the virus disease myxomatosis, for the control of rabbits. It is not a formal environmental impact report and was commissioned to assess reaction to the proposal. Copies of the assessment have been widely distributed to all environmental and protection groups, conservation societies and game shooters associa-
tions. Comment is invited and copies of the assessment are available for inspection at public libraries or on request to the council. Comments will be received up to and including April 15, 1983.”—Editor.]
