Woman killed in plane crash
NZPA-Reuter Singapore An Australian Mirage fighter and a Singapore Skyhawk collided while coming in to land at SingaKre’s Tengah military air se yesterday, and informed sources said that a women on the ground was killed by the wreckage. The sources said that both pilots ejected safely, but the Skyhawk hit the women’s house near the air base. A number of other people in the house escaped unhurt. The Singaporean pilot ran to the house after landing by parachute and carried the dead woman out of the wreckage. Both planes were taking part in air exercises involving Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. An Australian High Commission spokesman said that the two pilots had ejected seconds before the collision at a very low altitude. The four-day exercise is being held under the fivepower defence arrangement. Britain and New Zealand, the other two members of F.P.D.A., are not taking part in the exercises. The Australian Air Force will hold a commission of inquiry into the accident. A Singapore Defence Ministry spokesman was not available for comment, but military sources said that a similar inquiry would be conducted by the Singapore Air Force.
