New Sunday morning sports show
Television New Zealand will begin a new Sunday morning sports programme on April 3. The show will run on most Sundays from 9.30 a.m. till 11.30 a.m. but there will be some variation depending on early live material such as American golf or commitment to Church telecasts.
The producer, Murray Allison, says that it is a good time for a sports programme and there is plenty of overseas action in store. “In addition,” he says, “it is our desire to respond to topical issues as they arise. “Once the rugby season gets into full swing there will be a regular segment often containing provincial matches against the touring Lions or New Zealand provincial sides in Australia. Later in the season Canterbury’s matches in defence of the Ranfurly Shield will also be featured.” Some of the overseas content that Allison has lined up includes the world snooker championships, the world ice-skating championships, the Daytona races for both cars and bikes, international gymnastics, the English Rugby League Cup final, the Sydney Rugby League Cup final, N.B.A. Basketball from the United States, the world volleyball championships, World Cup showjumping, the James Hardie 1000 motor race from Bathurst and the world canoeipg championships. First up in the opening programme will be coverage of the Daytona 200 motor-cycle race — one of the world’s premiere events — and also highlights from the Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament. For the first time New Zealand has sent a national team.
