Prayers

Sir,—Mr May (March 8) continues to misinterpret history, having rejected the source-book, apart from which history is meaningless. His assertions have already been answered in brief. The Bible reveals: (1) Man’s dignity as a free agent, responsible for his decisions and acts. Mr May would take away that dignity, especially by his unworthy implication that God should answer prayer to save us from the consequences of our sin, without repentance. . There are prayer conditions. (2) Man’s capacity to self-destruct through inherent evil: witness Noah’s days, the Canaanites, Rome (remember Gibbon’s five points). Archaeology shows reason for Canaan being ripe for judgment. God cut away a cancer that could have destroyed a race, and gave the land to a new nation, delivered from slavery. (3) Mercy always precedes judgment. The Canaanites were given 400 years of grace to repent. (Gen. 15:13-16). Only one repentant person, a harlot, was found in Jericho, and spared, with her household. —

Yours, etc., H. G. ORAM. March 9, 1983.
