Nine rescues on harbour
Small craft and sailboards were the victims of a gusty north-westerly wind which came up suddenly on Lyttelton Harbour yesterday afternoon. The Canterbury Volunteer Coast Guard control room was busy for most of the afternoon with calls from members of the public reporting sightings of craft in distress. The rescue boat Margaret, skippered by Mr B. Lindsay, helped nine craft, all small yachts and sailboards.
The president of the Coast Guard, Mr Harold Mason, said there were no big incidents. The north-westerly wind had “taken sailors by surprise,” he said.
Those rescued were having problems righting themselves in the harbour.
Medical treatment was required for one young boy who had been hit by a boat’s propeller.
