Nuclear weapons
Sir,—The greatest threat hanging over mankind is that of nuclear warfare. The Japanese are the only people to have suffered from nuclear weapons, and, no doubt they do not want a repeat of that experience. Should a nuclear detonation occur over Christchurch, it would do no good to expect the medical profession to be on hand to tend to the wounded. The hospitals would be demolished along with all other buildings. There would be no medical services available. All concerned people, no matter in which country they live, should demand an end to nuclear weaponry. The Christchurch City Council deserves credit for declaring Christchurch a nuclear weapon-free zone one year ago. Their peace festival on Sunday, March 20, at North Hagley Park, should be supported by caring citizens. The parade of floats, displays, top rate entertainment and good speakers should make for a memorable day—Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. March 15, 1983.
