Seal culling
Sir,—On Monday evening television viewers were presented with what was intended as an unbiased account of the annual seal cull on the Canadian ice floes. We saw Canadian political ministers attempting to justify this bloody torturing method of killing innocent baby seals, in front of their mothers. They claim that humane societies agree that the seals are killed humanely — skinning alive is humane? The Canadian Fisheries Minister is attempting to play God by stating that human intervention is required so that seals do not dominate in the food chain. When a population of any species exceeds its own so-called carrying capacity it undergoes self-regulatory mechanisms that ensure the population does not reach overwhelming proportions. The Canadian Government wants this butchery to continue solely because of profit, no matter what the ministers say to the contrary.—Yours, etc., LEONNE WATSON. March 14, 1983.
