Another squid boat liquor theft
Duty-free liquor and cigarettes have been stolen from another Japanese squid boat berthed at Lyttelton. The Lyttelton police are investigating the theft of nine bottles of Japanese whisky and 1200 cigarettes, valued at $l5O, from the Kiyo Maru 37 on Wednesday evening. It was a similar theft to one last week-end in which another Japanese vessel lost $2OOO worth of duty-free liquor and cigarettes. In both cases the goods had been sealed by the Customs Department, which means the crew will have to pay duty on any missing items, unless they are recovered. Thieves walked aboard the Kiyo Maru and cut a customs seal in the vessel’s coolstore where the goods had been placed. The goods could be seen through her porthole.
