Gilpin suggested to the Christchurch Beautifying Association, that a Garden Competition similar to that of Memorial Avenue be held for the Main North Road, which is the northern gateway to the city. Initially gardens between Styx Bridge and Cranford Street have been judged and it is the intention of the Society to extend , the competition from the Northern Motorway to Papanui. Recently the gardens were judged by Messrs R. A. Proctor, H. G. Gilpin and J. F. Walsh. The judges were impressed by the high standard of gardens and there was evidence Of pride in their properties by residents and businessmen alike.
