French religious stand for Communists
NZPA London A nun is standing as a Communist candidate in Vannes in French municipal elections on Sunday. In Le Mans a priest is included in the Communist mayor’s list, and another priest is standing for the party in Marseilles. Their decisions have brought criticism from members of the Catholic hierarchy. The Bishop of Le Mans.
the Most Rev. Georges Gilson. said: “Except in special situations, priests have another mission to fulfil ... whatever the partv involved." In Marseilles the Archbishop. Cardinal Roger Etchegaray. said: "A priest’s mission calls for considerable reserve in regard to political activity." The Bishop of Vannes. the Most Rev. Pierre Auguste, took particular exception to the fact that Sister Yvonne
had chosen the Communist Party. “A nun’s calling cannot be reconciled with adherence to a Marxist system.” he said. A non-party candidate apparently causes no problems for the Church. Father Peter, a Cistercian monk from Soligny-la-Trappe Abbey in the Orne Department. is standing as a candidate on the "joint list for the defence of local interests" with the blessing of his abbot and the local Bishop.
