Salmon of 11.54 kg
A 11.54 kg salmon caught in the Rakaia River yesterday has won Mr Edwin Smith, of Waimate. $lOOO and may win him a further $BOOO. The fish was the heaviest of 30 weighed in yesterday's session of the salmon-fishing contest organised by the Rakaia River Promotion Association.
Mr Smith won the $lOOO daily prize and, because his fish was heavier than Wednesday’s winner, is leading the competition for the heaviest fish caught over the five days of fishing. The contest, to promote fishing in the area, has drawn 600 entries.
Mr Bruce Kelly, one of the organisers, said fishermen had found yesterday’s conditions cold. The fishing had improved as the river level had risen and the water had “got a bit more colour.” The competition will continue today.
