Frank Tyson to conduct clinic
Frank Tyson, a highly successful fast bowler for England in the middle 19505. and now a television commentator in Australia, will be in Auckland lalter this month to instruct at an advanced fast bowling clinic.
Tyson, who took 75 wickets in his 17 tests, was dubbed “Typhoon" in Australia during the 1954-55 test series. In it, he took 28 wickets at 20.8, including seven for 27 in the second innings of the Melbourne test. He may remember Eden Park too: he took two for 10 when New Zealand made its record low score of 26.
The idea of Tyson coming to New Zealand, and conducting a coaching school, came from a former New Zealand test fast bowler, John Hayes, who played in that match in Auckland. He is very conscious of the fact that New Zealand is badly in need of bowlers who will make satisfactory replacements in the next year or two for Richard Hadlee, Lance Cairns and Ewen Chatfield. Hayes will assist Tyson at the school on March 26 and 27. The school will involve open wicket practice, nets, the use of Auckland's new indoor school, and video tape machinery. The school has received the
full support of the New Zealand Cricket Council's coaching committee, and 13 bowlers have been selected for the clinic by the national selectors (Messrs Frank Cameron, John Guy and Don Neely). They are: Brendon Bracewell (Otago), Mark Carrington (Northern Districts), Andrew Davy (Wellington). lan Irvine (Auckland), Doug McMillan (Canterbury), Kevin Marshall (Wellington), Simon Millichip (Canterbury), Gary Robertson (Central Districts). Martin Snedden (Auckland). Derek Stirling (Central Districts). Sean Tracy (Auckland). Gary Troup (Auckland), Richard Webb (Otago). Most of the players have had first-class experience. Irvine was in the New Zealand under 19 team in Australia, and had much success. He is said to have an action similar to that of the former test player. Bob Cunis.
Davy had two years in the national secondary school team. Marshall has had two years with Wellington B. He was in Christchurch in 1980-81, playing two games for Old Boys, scoring a century against Old Collegians and taking five wickets for 108 in his two appearances.
