Pioneers’ marching bid

.Acme Pioneers will be looking to maintain their stranglehold on the senior, junior and midget titles in the South Island marching championships at the A. and P. Showgrounds today. Over 400 individuals in teams from Nelson to Bluff will be participating in the event, which will provide a useful build-up for the New Zealand championships in Wellington next month. The Christchurch Pioneers club will be aiming for a record sixth consecutive senior championship win as well as its fourth junior and second midget victory in succession. The senior combination has shaped up impressively with its only defeat this season coming at the hands of Wellington’s Mcßae Metro Ford in the inter-dominion championships last month. Its main rival is likely to be Christchurch's McAlpine Stars, led by the joint interdominion leaders’ champion, Jackie Sibley. Sibley shares the title with her Pioneers counterpart, Trish Flanagan. In the junior section, Redwood Rangers, coached by Liz Melrose, should provide stiff competition for Acme Pioneers. Another prominent contender will be the Edin-

burgh Guards, of Otago. The competition in the midget grade has been evenly fought this season with the Acme Pioneers, the Skellerup Militaires Cracker-

jacks and the Sockburn Ford Lasers vying for top honours. In the most recent march in Christchurch, the young Waitaki Kilties, of South Canterbury. were display winners.
