Challenge Cup league
The 1982 finalists, Widnes and Hull, hardly lived up to their reputations during, the first round of the British rugby league Challenge Cup knock-out competition. Widnes, the most successful club at Wembley over the last decade, was beaten, 12-6, by Leeds. The result was overshadowed only by the 1211 elimination of Hull Kingston Rovers by the second division side. Hunslet. The cup-holder, Hull, was expected to have an easy
assignment against Blackpool Borough, but its winning margin was only 19-11. Two Kiwis, James Leuluai and Gary Kemble, were tryscorers for Hull, and their test team-mate, Dane O'Hara, dropped the ball with a clear run to the line. Much of the credit for Blackpool’s determined effort was given to the Addington and Canterbury B threequarters. Chris Towart. who had a sterling defensive game as a centre for Blackpool.
