San Francisco Melons from New Zealand are selling in San Francisco for as much as $25 each. Described as "New Zealand white melons." a few cartons of the fruit have arrived from Turners and Growers to be sold wholesale for about $2B a carton of about 5.5 kg containing from four to six melons. When they appear in a retail greengrocer’s display like that at Jurgensen's, a luxury market, the price tag translates to $17.35 a kilogram. A wholesaler expressed shock, not so much at the price, but at the fact that Californians buy them at such prices. The’ demand is, however, said to be very limited, with about 60kg having comprised the first shipment. Pepinos. or tree melons from New Zealand, are also on the market. A pepino. the size of a small orange, brings about $3 retail. New Zealand blueberries are retailing for $8.50 a punnet.
