Well-fed ego
West Germany's world champion rally driver Walter Rohrl. sacked from his post as leader of the Opel factory team towards the end of last year, unburdened himself in his regular column. "Rohrl's Rallying." in the leading British weekly. ••Motor", recently. He wrote: "For me it is still very important to do well. I need to win rallies to keep up my ego .. .’’ Rohrl. one-time secretary to the Roman Catholic Archbishop in Munich, had already contracted to drive for the Italian Lancia team when Opel hurriedly
dispensed with his services. ; Now he has given his ego its first good meal of 1983 by winning the Monte Carlo Rally, despite a protest that his Lancia did not conform to the rally regulations. Rohrl has the unhappy! knack of saying in public I what he does " not, really l mean, so it is only to be! expected that some of hisopposition in the rally world; will continue to try to make! his career path even more! difficult than the hazards hej is likely to encounter onL rally special stages.
