Bonus trip for young player
PA Auckland Derrick Rostagno, a 17-year-old Californian who won the tennis satellite masters tournament at Stanley Street yesterday’, earned a bonus trip to Europe for finishing runner-up on the circuit. Rostagno. a recent graduate of Rolling Hills (California) High School, beat a fellow American, Matt McDonald. 6-7 (2-7). 6-3. 6-0. His victory, making him runner-up .to the Australian, John McCurdy, on the circuit, brought" Rostagno the reward of the trip to Europe for a further series of professional tournaments. Rostagno showed great fighting qualities in recovering from a first-set tiebreaker loss. McDonald, a professional in his third year, said: “He (Rostagno) was just too hot on the day. He never let up." The "24-year-old North Carolina State University graduate played the big points well in the first set, but was never allowed back into the game. . In the semi-finals on Sat-
urday Rostagno beat Greg Whitecross (Australia) 7-5, 63. while McDonald defeated Ken Barton (Australia) 6-4. 36. 6-4. John McCurdy and Peter Johnston, both from Melbourne. won the men's doubles, beating the Americans. Jeff Turpin and Cary Stanbury. 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. In the semi-finals McCurdy and Johnston beat McDonald and Martin Guntrip (England) 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-2. Turpin and Stanbury beat Mark Lewis (New Zealand) and Whitecross 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
