Lead in petrol

Sir.—Eric Bennett . knows the Government is in a corner over reducing lead levels in petrol quickly. I admit that some technologists have suffered “tunnel vision;” to them efficient petrol engines required high octane petrol and lead was a cheap way of obtaining it. The oil industry thought that lead additives would eke out world oil reserves; now it is expensive to adapt to other high octane components ■ and to install equipment takes time. It took years partly to persuade the public that high lead levels could be harmful to children and upset their schooling. The Government by subsidising public transport is encouraging

motorists to use buses instead of cars in built-up areas. To travel by bus is one way of reducing atmospheric lead in our city immediately. — Yours, etc.,

PATRICK NEARY. February 18, 1983.
