‘N.Z. faces hydro dilemma’

PA Opotiki New Zealand has to face the dilemma of hydro and irrigation development on many of the best rivers, says the Minister of Works and Development. Mr Friedlander. Addressing the opening of the Tablelands irrigation scheme at Opotiki. the Minister said that New Zealand must weigh the economic and social benefits of such schemes against the need and desire to retain the natural environment. The Government was extremely conscious of these competing demands, he said. Where it was practicable and desirable the Government wanted to see irrigation developed at the fastest possible rate in order to ensure that horticulture and farming opportunities were maximised. The Government’s financial input into irrigation schemes throughout NewZealand had increased in real terms from $20,545,000 in the three years 1970 to 1973 to an estimated expenditure of $52,038,000 in 1979 to 1982. Mr Friedlander said.
