$10M of mutton sold to Russia
PA Wellington The Meat Board has sold 10.000 tonnes of mutton to the Soviet Union, about 10 per cent of the season's total production. The sale of new season's stock was made at the end of last year, export sources confirmed yesterday. The board, which is buying up all export mutton this season, has not confirmed the sale. The sale price is not known, but on present prices it would be about SUSIO
million. Last year the board lost $26.7 million on it mutton trading. It expects to make a further loss on lamb and mutton this year. The board's chairman. Mr Adam Begg, said this week that further cost increases could make the processing of adult sheep for export uneconomic. Last season the Soviet Union was the biggest single buyer of New Zealand mutton. taking about 63.000 tonnes of the total export shipments of 108,000 tonnes.
