SIDELINES

OTAGO RIGBY has suffered a blow with the shift to Auckland of its best plaver of recent seasons, the Junior All Black full-back. David Halligan. With Halligan now available for Auckland, it will be interesting to see whether Bn an Williams remains available for first-class play. Last season Williams, once regarded as the best wing in the world, proved more than adequate at full-back. Halligan too. has a claim to fame. He was chosen for the All Blacks two years ago. but because of an injury did not take the field.

THE DEATH bv accident of the Avon club rower. Neil Pepperell, last week, was greeted with much sadness in the rowing fraternitv. Pepperell won New Zealand championship medals in the novice eights and pairs at Lake Waihola last vear and he had been showing a great deal of promise in the No. 7 seat in this year's Avon intermediate eight. His coach. Mr Doug Burrowes. said the 21-year-old Pepperell was shaping up as another Wybo Veldman. "As far as I was concerned he was the type of guy that if I had eight of. I don't think anyone in the world would get near them, he said A rowing guard of honour was formed by friends of Pepperell at his funeral in Christchurch earlier this week. THE INCLUSION of Central Canterbury and North Canterbury brings the number of teams to 14 for the junior interdub golf series for the G.W.A. Green Cup this season. The first two rounds of the competition will be played at Russley on Sunday. RL'SSLEV HAS won the cup for the last two years and. with few changes to its team, must rate highly again in the event, which is played off handicap. Waimairi Beach, which won last season's East zone. Waitikiri and Harewood, which has been allowed two teams because of its junior strength, appeal as likely teams to dethrone the title-holder. Other teams arc Avondale. Kaiapoi. McLeans Island. Coringa. Windsor. Christchurch and Templeton. Teams comprise six players who are under 21 on the day of the competition. SYDENHAM PARK has often provided a thick, slow outfield for senior cricket. It was anything but like that on Saturday, when Burnside-West scored 144 in boundaries, from 209 runs off the bat. Svdenham was in a similar mood, scoring 100 in boundaries from 133 off the bat. All told, fours and sixes accounted for 244 of the 342 runs, extras apart.
