E.E.C. pull-out timetable

NZPA-Reuter London The British Labour Party yesterday spelt out an 18month timetable to get Britain out of the European Economic Community. The party's European spokesman. Eric Heffer. said that a Labour Government would hope to complete the main negotiations for withdrawal within a year or 18 months. Detailing the steps. Mr Heffer said that a Labour Administration would open preliminary talks with the Community immediately after coming to power. This would be followed by

a Government White Paper, and as soon as possible by a bill to amend the European Communities Act. 1972. ending the Community’s powers in Britain. After the main talks were completed the act would be repealed. Mr Heffer said: "At this stage we will break all formal links with the Community and then withdraw from the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament." He said that the Labour Party was not anti-Euro-pean. but Community regulations would inhibit the party's economic policies.
