Matamata, Linwood prominent in pairs

Matamata. with four teams, has the best club representation through to the last 32 in the pairs at the Bell Tea national women’s bowls tournament in Christchurch.

It is followed closely by Linwood, the tournament headquarters, which will have three teams contesting the fourth post-section round this morning. The Matamata skips still in contention are Thelma Kidd, Betty Schwass, Rhoda Ryan and Elsie Wilkie,* the latter two both being past pairs champions. Linwood, too, has a previous winner in Agnes Beazley and she will be supported today by Denise Page and Natalie Cooke.

The other 25 skips who will resume at Linwood today in search of a place in tomorrow's final are:—

Flora McKinnon (Whangarei), Audrey Griffith (Fendalton), Nel Baker (Auckland Women’s), Gladys Jellyman (Wakefield), Daphne Le Breton (Upper Hutt), Mabel Coveny (Lower Hutt), Shirley Spear (Papakura), Lorraine Carson (Woolston Park), Margaret Lloyd (Morrison Avenue), Moira . O’Brien (Mairangi Bay), Joan Rennie (Rangiora), Ros Windle (Papatoetoe). Phyllis Reynolds (Tainui), Colleen Dowling (Waiere), Altha Triggs (Riccarton Women's), Noeline Burrowes (Burnside), Ema Granich (Carlton). Marjorie Brocklehurst (Woolston W.M.C.), Olga La Hood (Manly), Edna Moffatt (Miramar). Eunice Mason (Hastings). Jean Porter (Wellington Central). Phyllis McDonald (Riccarton Racecourse). Kath O'Connor

(Barrington). Rita Hight (Ashbury). Three other Linwood skips were eliminated in the final round yesterday. Helen Yates, Hazel Anderson and Dot White, who was beaten by one when her opponent (Mrs Dowling). managed a two on the final end.

However. Mrs Page reduced the Matamata challenge when she came with a strong finish to pip the 1977 champion. Bettv Fitzell. 1716.

A catch-up game in the singles was made possible yesterday when Joyce Osborne (Manawatu) and Sheila Boyes (Wellington Women’s) were both early casualties from the pairs, Mrs Boyes, in •fact being the lead in the team which beat Mrs Osborne. However. Mrs Osborne extracted her revenge when she and Mrs Boyes met in the singles later in the day. Mrs Osborne was 14-0 tip after six ends and she coasted home. 23-6.

Mrs Osborne's next opponent in Zelda Clements (Matamata), who is Mrs Wilkie’s pairs lead and whether this game can be played today will depend on how long Mrs Wilkie survives. Hazel Harper (Buckland) awaits the winner and this match will determine who will meet Jean Lash (Rocky Nook) in the singles final.

When the fours final will be played is also dependent on pairs results. One of the finalists, Jean Ryan (Onehunga), was eliminated from the pairs yesterday, but the other, Flora McKinnon (Whangarei), is still going strong and if she wins again this morning the likelihood of

all three finals being played tomorrow will increase. Results of the last of the three pairs rounds yesterday were:— N. Burrowes (Burnside) 27. H. Yates (Linwood) 11; E. Granich (Carlton) 20. D.
