Copernicus pleases
Special correspondent Dunedin Copernicus shaped attractively in training at Wingatui on Tuesday, in preparation for the second leg of the Otago Racing Club’s T.A.B. double on Saturday. Working on a fast plough, Copernicus drew a length clear of Bold Ambassador at the finish of 800 m, run in 49.55.
Copernicus was running on well for ■ fourth in the Breeders' Stakes at Riccarton last week, which was in line with her third placing at Gore this month.
Justa Pique and Katiki Bay dashed over 1000 m in Imin 1.25, the last 600 m in
49.35. Both could be prominent on Saturday. Auditory and Minnih.aha ran 1000 m on the sand in Imin 4.25, the last 600 m in 395, Seafarer and Irish Note returned Imin 4.55, the opening 400 m in 25.75. Jomegs and Personality Flight, rivals in the Noble Bijou Handicap, ran 1200 m in Imin 20s, the last 600 m in 39.55.
John Dowling has been engaged to ride Sky Rover on Saturday, but has yet to receive word from the Racing Conference on an application to renew his jockey’s licence.
Dowling retired from race riding in October 1975 after
riding Bell Flight to win the McLean Stakes at Wingatui. Dowling, aged 41, who gave riding away due to a weight problem, has had the renewal of his licence endorsed by the Otago District Committee.
Ted White, the ownertrainer of Sky Rover, has bought a yearling half brother by Jubilee Wine to Beau Ideal, which resumes racing on Saturday after a lay-off with injury. Beau Ideal injured a knee after an impressive maiden win at Oamaru in March. Beau Ideal looks big and burly, but he has been in work for some weeks and could surprise fresh up.
