Burletta looks fit for Breeders’ Stakes
Special correspondent Hastings
Burletta showed she has trained on in fine style with a rousing 800-metre gallop at the Hastings track on Tuesday.
The two-year-old three legs filly has not raced since finishing second behind Validity in the Dalgety Stakes at Trentham on January 24. However, she has been given plenty of solid work to fit her for Saturday’s Matamata Breeders' Stakes. Burletta was withdrawn from her engagement at Wairoa last Saturday, but there was nothing amiss with her. Her connections were concerned about earning a rehandicap for Matamata
had she won
Burletta was given a gallop between races on the second day of the Wairoa meeting, last Monday. She worked in company with stablemate, Watch Me, on an easy course proper yesterday. Burletta, with the slightly heavier weight, was hitting out strongly on the inside at the end of 800 metres in 48.95. the last 600 in 37.55, a good gallop 10 metres out. Jim Cassidy will be going north to ride Burletta at Matamata. Cassidy will also ride another Hastings horse at the meeting in Kia Kaha. Kia Kaha is a relatively new member of the Rose Durrant-Jill Martin stable.
She was a double winner in Australia before coming to New Zealand. Yesterday, she worked with stablemate Volition over 800 metres on the course proper in 49.15. the last 600 in 375. Kia Kaha needed the run when fifth over 1200 metres at Rotorua at her last start. She steps up to 1400 on Saturday.
Prenora. preparing for Saturday’s Woodville meeting. took the time honours with 800 metres in 48.55, the last 600 in 36.65. She only had a light weight to carry, but it was nevertheless a good workout. She obviously appreciated the slightly easier footing.
